Your first step into wine
A practical introduction to wine for beginners and anyone looking to build a firmer foundation. With JC Viens, you’ll explore the main wine styles through tasting, learn to describe what’s in your glass and discover the basics of food and wine pairing.
The course is taught in English at Atelier del Vino in Verona, with time for questions, discussion and guided exercises.

At least 10 wines selected by JC Viens to explore different styles and characteristics.

In a wine shop, at a restaurant or at home with friends, you’ll have more confidence in choosing, pairing and serving wine. If you work in hospitality or wine retail, it will help you describe wines and answer common customer questions.
It’s a starting point for developing a personal interest or taking your first steps into working with wine, with no previous knowledge required.
No. The course is designed for beginners and anyone who wants to build a firmer foundation in wine. No previous qualifications are required: throughout the day, we’ll cover the key concepts together and put them into practice through guided tasting.
At Atelier del Vino, the WSET Level 1 course is taught entirely in English, including the study materials and exam. You should be able to follow explanations and understand written questions. Wine terminology is introduced during the course.

Yes. We’ll send you the WSET textbook in advance and ask you to read it before the course, so you can become familiar with the topics and wine terminology in English.
During the day, we’ll work through the syllabus together, with explanations, guided tastings and time for questions, to prepare you for the final exam. Reading beforehand will help you follow with greater confidence and make the most of your time in class.
The exam takes place at the end of the day and is in English at Atelier del Vino. It consists of 30 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes, without consulting your textbook or notes. To pass, you must answer at least 21 questions correctly out of 30 (70%).
There is no practical tasting exam.
If you’d like to develop your knowledge further, WSET Level 2 is the next step. It explores the principal grape varieties, wine regions and factors that influence wine style and quality in greater depth. If you’re unsure which path suits you best, we can discuss it together at the end of the course.
